The enzyme complexes of the mitochondrial elecwx tron transport chain are unique 1; each
is composed of subunits encoded by two different genomes–Ž. mitochondrial DNA mtDNA
and nuclear DNA. Cy-Ž. wx tochrome c oxidase COX 2, 3, the last enzyme complex in the
chain, provides an ideal model system in which to analyze both coordinate and tissue-
specific transcriptional regulation of the genes for these essential respiratory enzymes. The
